One of my main goals for this year is to archive my *own* family photos. Yes, I have thousands of photos but haven’t assembled them into albums or frames. It’s time I created a archive of my own personal memories —many are simply snapshots and not works of art. So many of these are favorites and they just make my heart smile. They are also a good reminder for me to keep shooting and savor ordinary moments. Moments when hair is tangled, faces are messy, when the light isn’t good, and when we’re just being us.

I was excited when I got the email a few weeks ago that an old friend wanted me to photograph her family. Andrea and I first met each other in fourth grade in Mrs. McHales class. We just happened to move out of our hometown and into the same city. When we saw each other last week it felt just like old times all over again. We did have a couple of hang ups in the begining of our session but it all worked out and this little one was a pure delight!

This picture happened to be taken in front of the restaraunt where my husband and I had our first date 9 years ago. I honestly didn't remember it being this colorful in the front but it has been a couple of years since we have been back there. I'm such a sucker for great color and texture and yes you can do fun things in photoshop to bring out color!

They were great sports even with it being so hot outside. By the end we were all a sweaty, dusty, dirty mess. I love black and white photographs and I always say someday I will have a whole wall in my house dedicated to black and white pictures. I know this is unoriginal to say but they really do have that timeless, classic, pottery barn-esque feel. There are some many variations to black and whites and you can tweak them in so many different ways! The third picture is one of my favorites and I love the contrasty feel of it.

Despite starting early in the morning this session was a hot one! We pretty much fried out there but everyone was a trooper. By the end of it we were all hot, sweaty, thirsty, and tired. The last shots of the day were the ones of her in front of the white barn with the green suitcase. I almost didn't get them but I'm so glad we did!

These are my boys and honestly they are my hardest subjects to photograph oh that and my husband. I get it they don't want to pose for pictures so I don't really make them. I always feel like the best pictures are the "unposes". Those always seems to be the ticket in getting personalities to shine through. Let kids play, explore do what they do best and you'll be bound to get some fun shots. This picture was taken after they had explored for awhile and I asked them to just stand by each other and do whatever they wanted and thats what I got. No its not a Olan Mills looking picture just real life.
